My AC Has Been Running for 11 Days Straight. I'm Scared to Open My Electric Bill.

Image
AI Image   By Gemma I haven't turned my air conditioner off since June 23rd. Not once. Not even at night when it cools down slightly. Because it doesn't cool down. Not this summer. Not on the East Coast in July 2026, where temperatures have been sitting above 95°F for nearly two weeks and the forecast shows no meaningful relief until next week at the earliest. My AC runs. My bill climbs. And somewhere in my mailbox, an envelope is waiting that I'm genuinely not ready to open. Here's what's actually happening to the US power grid right now. PJM — the largest power grid operator in the US, serving 13 states and Washington DC — declared an emergency this week. Spot wholesale electricity prices in the region surged beyond $2,500 per megawatt hour. For context, the normal price when the grid isn't in distress is about $40 per megawatt hour. That's not a typo. Prices jumped from $40 to $2,500. In a week. Power prices from New York to Virginia are surging a...

I Failed a Basic Money Quiz Last Week. I'm 34. Here's What It Actually Taught Me.

Image
AI Image By Gemma I want to tell you something embarrassing. Last Tuesday I sat down with a coffee, opened a 28-question financial literacy quiz developed by Stanford University and TIAA, and told myself it would take fifteen minutes. It took forty. And I got 47% right. Exactly the national average. Which sounds fine until you realize the national average just hit a 10-year low. I didn't beat the curve. I was the curve. I sat there for a minute staring at the results screen. Then I closed the laptop. Then I opened it again because I needed to understand what just happened. Here's what the quiz actually tests. Eight areas: earning, spending, saving, investing, borrowing, insuring, understanding risk, and finding reliable information. Stanford and TIAA have run this same test every year for a decade. The highest Americans ever scored was 52%, back in 2020. This year: 47%. The lowest ever. One in four Americans now falls into the "very low financial literacy...

Trump White House Renovation Costs and Markets: Why Fiscal Expansion Risk Is Reshaping Investor Positioning

Image
Trump White House renovation costs are drawing attention as investors track fiscal expansion, Treasury yields, and sector rotation in 2026. On May 2, 2026, Treasury markets delivered a clearer signal than the political headlines did. The 10-year Treasury yield climbed toward 4.78%, its highest level in nearly five months, while the iShares US Aerospace & Defense ETF (ITA) outperformed the S&P 500 by roughly 320 basis points over the following five trading sessions. At the same time, political debate intensified around Trump White House renovation costs and broader proposals tied to executive security infrastructure. Most media coverage focused on the symbolism of the ballroom project itself. Markets focused on fiscal direction. That distinction explains why this story matters beyond politics. Investors entered the second quarter already grappling with elevated Treasury issuance, persistent inflation pressure, and growing uncertainty surrounding the Federal Reserve’s rate...

If MrBeast Said "I'm Buying Ethereum"—Could His Fans Really Push ETH to $10,000 Overnight? I Did the Math (and It Broke My Delusion)

Image
The viral premise (and why it made me pause) I saw a post floating around that said something like this:  "All MrBeast has to do is mention 'I'm buying Ethereum' once in a video and if just 50% of his fans buy only $100 worth of ETH, that would push Ethereum's price up to $10,000 tomorrow." My first reaction was  "that sounds insane."  My second reaction was  "but what if I actually check the math?"  Because if there's one thing I've learned from years watching crypto markets, it's this:  hype narratives collapse the moment you plug in real numbers. Who is MrBeast (and why does his reach matter)? For context:  MrBeast (Jimmy Donaldson)  is the most-subscribed individual YouTuber on the planet, with  approximately 467 million subscribers  as of early 2026.  Source: WEEX Q&A  |  Wikipedia That's not just "influencer-level reach"—that's  half a billion people  who could theoretically see a single video. S...

If the Market Drops 10–20%: Here’s What Happens to My $100K SPY/QQQ/Bonds Portfolio

Image
I’ve learned the hard way that markets don’t “announce” a bearish phase with one headline. What they do is  quietly change behavior : rallies get weaker, leadership narrows, volatility starts acting different, and suddenly the dip-buying muscle memory stops working. So instead of guessing, I use a checklist. If enough boxes flip from green to yellow (and yellow to red), I stop thinking in “new highs soon” terms and start thinking in “capital preservation” terms. Step 1: I define what “bearish phase” actually means (for me) For me, a bearish phase isn’t only the textbook “down 20% = bear market.” That’s a headline definition that usually arrives late. What I care about is whether the market enters a regime where: Uptrends break and fail to recover quickly Risk appetite fades (growth and small caps struggle) Volatility becomes sticky (fear doesn’t fade fast) In other words: I’m not waiting for the label. I’m watching for the  behaviour . Step 2: I watch the “market engine”: brea...
