Tom Bateman & Lili Reinhart to Star in ‘The Love Hypothesis’ – Everything You Need to Know

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably devoured Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel The Love Hypothesis in one emotional sitting, clutching your Kindle at 2 a.m., wondering how a fake dating trope could feel so real. Well, get ready to clutch your heart again, because something magical is brewing in the world of film. Yes, it's true — The Love Hypothesis is being developed as a feature film, and the casting reveal just went and sent the fans (like myself) into complete pandemonium.
Tom Bateman to play opposite Lili Reinhart in The Love Hypothesis
So there's the scoop: Tom Bateman has been officially cast as Dr. Adam Carlsen, brooding, brilliant professor we all love to despise (and despise to admire), to Lili Reinhart, who will be starring as our wonderful and gangly heroine, Olive Smith. If you're raising an eyebrow asking yourself if Bateman can bring off Adam's icy sarcasm and gold-heartedness, let me shoot you down right then and there — the answer is a resounding yes.
Tom Bateman has no compunction about portraying complex characters. I first noticed him in Murder on the Orient Express, and again later in Behind Her Eyes, where he was charming with a touch of reserve. That energy? Precisely what Adam Carlsen needs. I'm already imagining that scene when Adam growls in scientific frustration but secretly melts for Olive. Swoon.
What's the Movie About?
In case you haven't yet read the book (but let's be real, you probably will), here's the scoop. The Love Hypothesis is a romance novel about PhD student in biology Olive Stanford kissing the first guy she sees (yes, Adam Carlsen) to convince her best friend that she's dating someone. What begins as a light flirtation rapidly becomes much more complicated — and much more real — as Adam and Olive navigate academic politics, personal demons, and their undeniable chemistry.
The fake dating trope is also one of my pitfalls, and Hazelwood wrote it so from the heart and with so much authenticity that I couldn't help but keep reading. Now that Amazon MGM Studios and MRC are involved, though, I feel like I can already catch the sparks flying around this adaptation in theaters soon.
The Match Made Between the Stars
And now let's discuss chemistry, because rom-com casting is everything. Lili Reinhart can do emotionally grounded performance (Riverdale, Chemical Hearts), and she also has that certain je ne sais quoi of being vulnerable and fiery, just what Olive needs. Tom Bateman, aside from authoritative presence and subtlety of emotional range, is set to bring Adam's reserve and secret warmth.
Both of these actors are executive producers on the show, and let's not forget that. That means getting this story right, they're personally invested in. As a reader who lived and breathed through each page of the book, I can think of nothing else I want than a true adaptation that gets the humour, the tension, and the emotional arc of the characters right. This cast gives me hope.
Directed by Laura Terruso
This film is also in good hands creatively. Laura Terruso, known for her work on Work It and Good Girls Get High, is set to direct. Her style combines heart with a dash of fun, which is exactly the energy The Love Hypothesis needs. I’m excited to see how she brings the STEM world to life with cinematic flair.
Why This Adaptation Matters to Me
On a personal level, The Love Hypothesis was more than a romance. It was about being a woman in science, about imposter syndrome, and about finding something in common with someone in the unlikeliest of ways. It is like a victory for every woman who has ever had to prove herself in a world that didn't think she existed if she existed.
And for actual? It's high time that we have some wiser, book-wiser, and unapologetically ambitious love interests.
When do We Expect It?
There’s no official release date yet, but Filming is expected to begin soon. Sometime in late 2025, I’m hoping we’ll see it hit Amazon Prime Video with big studios and major stars on board. Watching Bateman’s past work, and counting down the days until then, I’ll be re-reading the book (again).
Final Thoughts
So here is my verdict: The Love Hypothesis movie adaptation is set up to be something really special. With Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman as the leads, and a production team that appears to be authentically passionate about the original novel, everything points to the movie doing the novel justice in charm, humor, and emotional pull.
If you're a fan of the book as much as I am — or if you just need a clever, feel-y romance on your screen — this one's for you.
A project is cooking, friends. The lab coats are on, the fake dating is out, and love is going to get a whole lot more complicated (and gorgeous).
