The Night the Main Stage of Tomorrowland Caught Fire
I'd been waiting years to witness this. Tomorrowland 2025 in Belgium—widely regarded as the most highly regarded electronic music festival on the whole planet—was finally in full swing, and I was here now in front of the stunningly gargantuan main stage, absorbing the atmosphere, lights, and overall atmosphere of the festival. But no amount of preparation could ever have prepared me for what was waiting in store next.
It was to be the highlight of the weekend. The centre of the attention, this breathtaking spectacle of light, flame, water, and mythic shape, was to be shared by some of the world's best DJs. There were a thousand or so of us all crammed in there in a compact bundle, arms waved above us, ribcage shaking to the beat of the music. And then, as the sun fell below the horizon and the opening headliner dropped a track that had the dance floor laughing hysterically, a sudden shift of atmosphere cautioned one and all that something was wrong.
I had already seen it, before anyone had registered—a cloud of black smoke off the right-hand side of the Tomorrowland main stage. We all assumed it was one of the fireworks at first. It wasn't. The fire spread more terrifyingly than anything else, up into the complex buildings and consuming the panel decorations which had made the stage so lovely to behold. The music cut out dead. People began looking around in confusion and then in terror.

Security came running in. The speakers stammered out words of comfort, instructing people to stay calm as festival officials ran over to see what was happening and push people back out of harm's way. I remember that I was holding my friend's hand so tightly as we pushed towards the doors. Adrenaline, fear took over.

It was unreal. Tomorrowland—the program I'd long seen from the distance of a television screen—now was reduced to a collection of strobing flashing emergency lights, fire hoses, and tearful shouting fights. Subsequent reports verified that the fire was most likely the result of a technical failure of the pyrotechnic stage equipment. Fortunately, there were no accounts of anyone being seriously hurt, and the evacuation proceeded smoothly with breathtaking efficiency.
But to witness the main stage of Tomorrowland go up in flames—halfway, at the very least—was something I shall never forget. Tragic. Every corner of the world had there, it was a place where music, community, and joy were everywhere for the people.
I was just thinking throughout the night and trying to understand what I had had happened there. Festival-goers were in these odd arrangements—there was hugging, there was battery sharing or water. There was this sort of collective sense that we'd all just seen something that was going to be historic, something that we could have never possibly imagined.

Tomorrowland organisers so far have made an official announcement that safety is the topmost priority for all of us. They promised the fans that they would have a thorough investigation into what happened and already had prepared to rebuild the stage. The festival continues, however, with an approximately altered lineup and with a collective sense of emotional healing. Looking back, I still had fun.
There was a fire, naturally. It was scary, naturally. But it was also a testament to how powerful and strong it is to build Tomorrowland as it is. We went there to listen to music and magic, and despite having a fire in front of us, we were able to do both of these things. Tomorrowland 2025 will forever be remembered due to the stage fire, but to me, it will forever be the year that I realized that I was part of something bigger than myself.
